Founder and director Zak Johnson has been passionate about building since childhood, from LEGO creations on the living room floor to construction projects in his father’s shed. His father, a mechanic, taught him the value of careful workmanship, while his mother encouraged his dreams, telling young Zak he could be anything he wanted.
After his apprenticeship and years working for other builders, Zak saw an industry full of problems he couldn’t ignore. Then, when he and his wife Jacqui welcomed their first child and both experienced post-natal depression, everything changed. This personal experience opened his eyes to how profoundly homes affect both physical and mental wellbeing.
Zak began studying proper ventilation, smart design for stable temperatures, materials that don’t off-gas toxins, and acoustic design that creates peace and quiet. He realised that most builders were doing surface-level updates without considering a home’s true potential for supporting family life and wellbeing.
Today, ZJ Building combines all this knowledge with proven systems and an expert team to create Adelaide’s healthiest, most comfortable homes, treating every project with the same care and attention they would their own family home.
The reality is that many builders treat renovations as fill-in work between new builds, don’t show up when promised, leave customers wondering what’s happening, and deliver surface-level updates without considering how homes truly affect daily life. Most concerning is the lack of understanding about proper design and construction methods that create healthy, comfortable living environments.
