Kitchen and Bathroom Renovation, Devon Park

Project Brief

Homeowners Craig and Sheree live in a beautiful 1950’s bungalow just north of Adelaide’s CBD. They’ve lived there for the last 15 years and finally decided they’d had enough of their outdated and run down kitchen which was small, cold and cramped.

They were referred to ZJ Building by a past client, initially with the plan to do up their home and sell. But after looking into it further and chatting with Zak, they instead decided that they were going to stay and turn the kitchen they were always unhappy with into something they loved spending their time in and could be proud of.

It was especially important to both ZJ Building and the homeowners to retain the character of the home throughout the renovations.

The kitchen is situated in an existing lean to extension at the back of the home and along with the kitchen, the extension was also in poor shape. It was filled with asbestos which needed urgent attention. We stripped it back to the basics and fixed up the framework which strengthened the structure and straightened up the ceiling. We also installed ornate cornices to tie in the character of the home.

In addition to the kitchen, the laundry was also located at the rear of the home and had always felt like wasted space to Craig and Sheree. By designing and installing a european laundry that seamlessly flowed on from the kitchens joinery the extra space was able to be converted into a stunning new second bathroom!

The previous space had always been dark and cold, with poor energy efficiency. We resolved this with new double glazed windows and sliding glass doors. A close relative of Craig and Sheree’s is in a wheelchair so improved access to the house was needed. They also had a fantastic outdoor entertainment area that they wanted to seamlessly transition to the rear of the house.

With Craig working FIFO in the mines, communication needed to be flexible. Zak, Tim and the office team understood this and prioritised Craigs preferred means of contact and continuously touched base. By using the online portal, Craig and Sheree were able to see exciting progress photos and read each day’s site notes.

Working with ZJ Building from the design process to practical completion, Craig and Sheree now have a kitchen, bathroom and euro laundry they love spending time in. As they expressed to us at their project handover they now find themselves sitting in their living room, looking through to their new kitchen, in disbelief that it’s really theirs.
