Home Addition, Panorama
Ben and Alex live in a beautiful two story 1970’s home in Panorama with their many children and family dogs. They’re a busy and vibrant family who love entertaining friends and family but found their home did not reflect who they were or their lifestyle.
They found us through a family connection to an architect we frequently work with. They had worked with another builder in the past who updated their bathroom, but unfortunately, the poor workmanship left Ben and Alex with little confidence that they could achieve what they were after for their larger project.
Their home is situated on the high side of a hill with amazing views of Adelaide. This position along with an old rock formed staircase from the driveway meant difficult and unsafe access to the front door. This made it especially challenging for their eldery parents when they came to visit them. The lower roof on the home wasn’t sealed properly, resulting in leaks. The original timber windows were very small and inefficient, letting in very limited natural light. The home needed some energy efficient solutions and was lacking storage space for Ben, Alex and their kids.
Ben and Alex are both professionals who love their home but didn’t feel like it reflected their personal style. It had become outdated and didn’t represent them or the lifestyle they wanted for their family. They found the clear 70’s style of the home’s facade dated it substantially and wanted to change this.
We worked with Mavtect Design to create a new beautiful character front staircase for improved access without impacting the street appeal. We helped with the layout for new windows; replacing them with much larger double glazed units, allowing for more natural light and energy efficiency. A servery window was also installed in the kitchen, to add functionally and flow when entertaining. The kitchen also received a new fresh look with new splashback and overhead storage units with a more powerful rangehood for better ventilation. New flooring was added to the main living area to clean up the indoor space and the house’s facade was updated with rendering and a new paint job.
Their beloved family dog had a not so fun habit of being quite destructive to the home’s interior. We were able to ‘dog proof’ the house by changing their timber doors and windows over to aluminum, and installing heavy duty security screens to hold back the pooch.
Beginning with a site visit then site measure, the relatively small job quickly became a much bigger project, with Ben and Alex deciding they wanted us to keep working on more of their home. They changed their minds frequently and found it difficult to make selections, but we were able to work through these decisions and give advice on what we thought was best. By providing a fixed price quote for all the changes as they came up to help them with their decisions.
They now have a home they feel reflects their personality and suits their lifestyle, with more functionality for their kids and ability to entertain. With eased accessibility, lower heating and cooling costs and a more modern look, the street appeal has skyrocketed and Ben and Alex now have a home that they can love for many more years to come.
