Everard Park, Outdoor Living

Project Brief

Alex lives in a beautiful 1920s Everard Park bungalow with her husband and three children. They purchased their property several years ago, which had already undergone a rear extension. She told us her backyard never felt like their own. It felt segregated and did not flow as one communal space. It was underutilised so they wanted to create a space that they felt was their own, a space they’d want to share with family and friends and could do so comfortably. Alex and her family love to entertain, but always had to do so inside their home, without being able to take advantage of their large backyard. They also knew they needed an oven that was large enough to cook for big groups, but inside didn’t have the availability for the oven size that they wanted. That’s how we knew an outdoor kitchen was the perfect solution. The outdoor kitchen needed to reflect their style and personality, whilst being highly functional and easily able to cater to large groups.

A stylish blend of modern and rustic is shown in the details such as the Dekton Trilium benchtop and splashback with matte black finishings. Their bathroom and laundry had been renovated by another builder a number of years ago, Alex told us they had “a pretty painful and negative experience through that.” ZJ Building was recommended to them by Elite Painting SA who had previously painted their home. Alex was impressed with Zak’s enthusiasm and attention to detail, telling us “Oh wow, he’s really organised, and if anything popped up through the process, we knew that would be dealt with in all care possible.”

They wanted to work with a builder who offered a fixed price, with no unexpected costs and surprises. Who also took every precaution to ensure no corners were cut and everything was done properly. When an issue arose with the roller door because the floor angles had changed, our site manager Tim made sure there weren’t any compromises and that we’d make it work. Tim and the team modified the door which now works seamlessly.

What was once a crammed and underutilised space is now a fully functional, stylish outdoor living area with plenty of space for kids to run around and room to comfortably entertain.

This is what Alex had to say:

“We love our outdoor area. It’s just in time for summer. We’ve had many locals walking past telling us just how much they’ve been excited about watching the progress. It’s lovely that the kids can run around out here now. There’s space for them. It’s fun, it’s exciting, and new, I guess. For someone who likes organisation, the way that everything is structured and it’s purposeful, it’s thought out, it’s professional.”
