Home Addition - Croydon Park
Project Brief
Anna and James, who have been long-time residents of a double-brick home built in 1954 in Croydon Park, have treasured this family property for over two decades. The sentimental value of the home is immense, especially since Anna’s father personally constructed the backyard verandah. Their strong emotional attachment to the house motivated them to choose renovation over demolition and rebuilding. However, this decision came with numerous challenges, primarily due to the home’s era of origin.
Homes constructed in the post-war 1950s were often subject to tight budget constraints, given material shortages. Consequently, less attention was paid to optimising the functionality of floor plans, resulting in today’s inefficient designs with poorly laid-out rooms and significant wasted space.
However, they both shared a dream and were determined to get it right. Their vision was to create a new, open-plan, modern living space while improving the layout of the existing home. For the rear addition, they aimed to achieve a modern look while paying homage to the original home’s art deco style, a special touch for Anna.
They faced challenges with squeaky and uneven floorboards, gaps in their windows, and poor insulation. Addressing these issues required careful attention to ensure they achieved the desired outcome.
To help them with this design brief, we entered a preliminary building agreement. This allowed us to assemble a dedicated design team that collaborated closely with Anna and James to transform their home aspirations into a concrete plan. With the expertise of Elia and his team at Mavtect Design, we successfully crafted a new layout that aligned perfectly with their desires, all while staying within an affordable budget.
Throughout the design and construction journey, Anna and James remained actively involved. This project required seamless collaboration and a collective effort from start to finish. Each team member contributed their specialised knowledge, enabling us to effectively address the unique challenges often presented by older homes.
Anna and James’ poorly functioning home has now been transformed into a spacious open-plan living area, complete with a new bathroom, a walk-in pantry, and a custom-tailored laundry to meet their needs. This renovation has not only enhanced the functionality of their home but significantly elevated their overall quality of life and also, (and most importantly) gave a nod to the original character of the home.
Anna and James are overflowing with joy about their newly renovated space. Leading into retirement, they can now both enjoy the comfort of a high performing freshly renovated home that will allow them to live in comfort and happiness.
